LIVABILITY

Highway church has had a long association with the Shaftesbury Society, a long established charity which worked to enable people in great need to achieve security, self-worth and significance and through this show Christian car in action.

In January 2007 the Shaftesbury Society took the historic decision to merge with the John Grooms charity (working with disabled people) and create a new charity – Livability was born! At their heart is a vision of working with people and communities affected by poverty and disability, helping them to maximise their potential. The new organisation started its work in July 2007 with over 2,000 staff and both organisations having been operating for over 140 years. It is now one of the largest Christian charities in the UK.

Their very important connection to and involvement with us is that Livability are trustees of Highway Church and as such have been and continue to be a vital and integral part of the development of our the new building. As a church we work very closely with the Community Missions Team.

FAIRTRADE

Is a way of supporting producers in developing countries by paying them a higher price for their products than they would get on the world market. In return the producers make sure their employees are treated fairly, guaranteeing them better working conditions and a higher salary.

On plantations and in factories, certain health and safety as well as environmental standards must be complied to. By buying Fairtrade you can be sure that no child labour has been used in the production. Therefore as a consumer in the UK you can do your part in achieving a fairer and socially juster world. Fairtrade goods include well known products such as`coffee, tea, sugar and bananas, but also flowers, wine, footballs, candles, wrapping paper and many more.

As a church we want the world to be as just as possible. That’s why we as a church are part of the Fairtrade movement and locally part of the campaign to make Newham a Fairtrade Borough. It’s one way to think globally and act locally!
